Today is World Kidney Day, a global awareness campaign focused on the importance of kidney health and the need for prevention, early detection, and timely care. Observed each year on the second Thursday of March, World Kidney Day brings together healthcare professionals, advocates, and communities around one simple idea: kidney health matters.

Your kidneys do a lot more than most people realize. They help filter waste and extra fluid from the blood, support healthy blood pressure, and help keep the body in balance. When kidney function declines, it can affect many parts of overall health.

One of the biggest challenges with kidney disease is that it often develops quietly. Many people do not notice symptoms early on, which is why awareness and routine checkups are so important. People living with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease may have a higher risk and should talk with their healthcare provider about kidney health.

The 2026 World Kidney Day campaign theme, Kidney Health for All – Caring for People, Protecting the Planet,” reminds us that kidney health is both a personal and public health issue. It calls for greater attention to prevention, earlier diagnosis, and care that supports healthier lives and stronger communities.

On World Kidney Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about their kidney health. Helpful steps can include staying active, eating a balanced diet, keeping up with routine medical visits, and asking questions if you have risk factors for kidney disease.

At Balboa Nephrology, we believe awareness is powerful. The more people understand kidney health, the more opportunities there are for prevention, early action, and informed care.

Today, on World Kidney Day, let’s help spread the message: kidney health matters.

Learn more about kidney health and the importance of early detection by talking with your healthcare provider and staying informed.
