Meet MJ Herrera, FNP-C, a nurse practitioner serving patients at Balboa Nephrology in El Centro and an important member of our kidney care team.
MJ works closely with Balboa nephrologists to help provide coordinated, compassionate care throughout a patient’s kidney health journey. During a visit, she may review symptoms, medications and lab results, answer questions, discuss changes in a patient’s health and help patients understand and stay on track with their treatment plan.

How MJ supports your care
Patients may sometimes wonder why they are scheduled to see a nurse practitioner rather than their nephrologist.
Seeing an NP doesn’t mean stepping away from your physician. Nurse practitioners are healthcare providers who work closely with nephrologists as part of a connected care team.
That collaboration can be especially valuable for people managing chronic kidney disease, which may require regular monitoring, medication management, laboratory testing and ongoing conversations about changes in health.
MJ can help patients discuss symptoms or concerns, better understand their lab results and medications, and know what questions may need additional follow-up with their nephrologist.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases also encourages people living with chronic kidney disease to work with their healthcare team to monitor kidney health and understand their treatment.
