Information to know for your visit:

It’s important to have your bloodwork done prior to your appointment. Lab and test results will be discussed during your visit.

It is important to have your lab order done 1-2 weeks prior to your appointment.
If you have labs for a primary care physician or any other provider, use BOTH orders to ensure each different specialty gets what they need to treat you
Having your labs done 1-2 weeks before your clinic visit is important because it gives your doctor time to receive the results and review to plan your care.

Please arrive 15-30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. Arriving early will allow time to:

Verify and scan insurance cards.
Verify and review signatures.
Review all your medications – even if there are no changes.

Knowing your current list of medications is very helpful.

Your Balboa Nephrology Care Team puts patients first and will be respectful of and responsive to your individual preferences, needs, and values.

Bring your medication list or bottles to every appointment even when there are no changes.

The most important care given is medication management.
Always inform your Balboa Nephrology care team if a different physician adds, delete or changes your medications.

The son of Vietnamese refugees, his mother was 8 months pregnant with me when she boarded a refugee boat in Cambodia. Dr. Cao’s family lived in refugee camps in Thailand and the Philippines until the United Nations eventually moved his family to the United States when he was 2. He grew up in Little Saigon in Orange County, California and have lived there most of his life. Dr. Cao completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Irvine and earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences with a minor in Anthropology. He attended medical school at Touro University Nevada, College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas. Dr. Cao completed his fellowship in Nephrology at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. Fellowship training was extremely unique in that he trained during the height of a global pandemic. During those unique times, he was challenged to think outside the box and develop new skills in extracorporeal blood purification. He practices at Sharp Memorial Hospital and covers the Sharp Metro area. He specializes in a variety of kidney diseases, glomerular diseases, kidney stone prevention, dialysis, and hypertension. He has a special interest in kidney and pancreas transplants and is part of the transplant team at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Dr. Chong obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. He completed his internal medicine residency and chief residency at Bassett Medical Center in New York. He completed his Nephrology Fellowship at Boston University followed by a Transplant Nephrology fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He very much enjoyed teaching and was an Assistant Professor as well as Associate Program Director of Nephrology Fellowship training at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
