FDA Speeding Up Vaccine Booster Plan Efforts

by | Aug 7, 2021 | COVID-19, News

As the Delta variant surges, the FDA continues to work on a COVID Vaccine Booster Plan and is now speeding up efforts to authorize extra doses. September may be a target date for the FDA to have a plan on who would receive booster shots among those Americans with weakened immune systems. Some countries are moving forward with plans for booster shots for those individuals with immunosuppressed systems.

According to CNBC.com, Federal health officials are working “as quickly as possible” to authorize a third Covid-19 vaccine shot for Americans with weakened immune systems, White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday.  It is clear now that such people – including cancer and HIV patients or those who have had organ transplants – in general do not produce an adequate immune response after receiving two doses of a Covid vaccine.”

“Immunocompromised individuals are vulnerable,” Fauci said during a White House briefing. “It is extremely important for us to move to get those individuals their boosters, and we are now working on that and we will make that be implemented as quickly as possible. It is a very high priority.”

Israel has begun offering third doses of the Pfizer vaccine to people at high risk of severe disease, and several European countries, including Germany and France, have said they will offer boosters to their vulnerable populations.
