33% of adults in the United States are at risk for kidney disease. That’s 1 in 3 people.  Kidney disease is a major public health concern and often goes undetected until it is very advanced. Unfortunately, this is when someone would need dialysis or a transplant. The key is to find kidney disease before the trouble starts. Regular testing for everyone is important, but it is especially important for people at risk.

Here are 5 quick tips for good kidney health:

1. Drink plenty of water!

2. Limit salt and processed foods.

3. Manage blood sugar and blood pressure.

4. Stay active!

5. Get regular checkups.

Other tips for good kidney health include:

  • Getting tested for kidney disease
  • Limiting alcohol
  • Losing weight if you’re overweight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Monitoring cholesterol levels
  • Drinking only in moderation
