Creative Ways to Manage Dietary Restrictions

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be bland. Many people with dietary restrictions worry that their meals will be boring or leave them feeling unsatisfied. But this doesn’t have to be the case! There are a lot of creative ways to manage dietary needs while still enjoying flavorful and satisfying dishes. In this post, Balboa Nephrology’s Registered Dietician and Health Educator, Min Krishnamurthy, MS RD explores: “What are some creative ways people on a kidney-friendly diet can manage dietary restrictions while still enjoying flavorful and satisfying meals?” 

Min: “Spice things up! Getting out of our comfort zone when it comes to herbs and spices and trying new combos can really add another dimension to the dining experience. Limiting sodium does not have to mean less flavor. Add freshly chopped green onion, cilantro, basil or chili peppers for a twist.

 

Go half and half with animal protein and plant based ones! Add in some lentils or chickpeas and reduce the portion of chicken in a stew or salad. You don’t need to give up your favorites, just add a twist to the recipes to keep the flavor you love with some added textures.”
