FDA Authorized Third Dose of Vaccine for Immunocompromised People

by | Aug 13, 2021 | COVID-19, News, Resources

The Food and Drug Administration has authorized third doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s coronavirus vaccines for some people with weakened immune systems.  The authorization was announced late on Thursday, August 12th and applies to people who received solid organ transplants and others with similarly compromised immune systems.  The highly anticipated move intended to shield some of the most vulnerable Americans from the highly contagious delta variant. Dr. Janet Woodcock, the acting FDA commissioner, said “After a thorough review of the available data, the FDA determined that this small, vulnerable group may benefit from a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna Vaccines.”

The FDA authorization comes a day before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s independent advisory committee is set to consider and vote whether to recommend the move.  If they issue a recommendation and it is approved by the CDC, third shots could begin immediately.  BNMG will continue to monitor the situation and will provide details as we receive them.
