Potassium: A Vital Nutrient to Watch When You Have Kidney Disease

by | Aug 5, 2024 | Nutrition, Patient Education, Resources

Potassium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in many bodily functions, including heart rhythm, muscle contractions, and nerve signals. While it’s vital for overall health, it’s particularly important to monitor potassium levels if you have kidney disease.

Why is potassium important for kidney health?

Healthy kidneys help regulate potassium levels in the body by removing excess amounts through urine. When kidney function declines, the kidneys may not be able to efficiently eliminate potassium, leading to a buildup in the blood. This condition, known as hyperkalemia, can be dangerous and even life-threatening.

Signs of high potassium levels include:

  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Irregular heartbeat

On the other hand, extremely low potassium levels (hypokalemia) can also occur in kidney disease, although it’s less common. This can cause muscle cramps, fatigue, and heart problems.

How can you manage potassium levels?

Working closely with your kidney care team is essential for managing potassium levels. This involves:

  • Regular blood tests to monitor potassium levels
  • A kidney-friendly diet that limits potassium intake
  • Medications to help regulate potassium levels

If you have kidney disease, understanding the importance of potassium and working with your healthcare provider to manage your levels is crucial for your overall well-being.

The American Kidney Fund (AKF) has launched patient-focused guidelines to help people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) manage and treat hyperkalemia, also known as high potassium.  Use this resource to help create and follow a plan to manage high potassium with the help of your doctor.
