Sauce It Up For the Holiday Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us and many people kick off this unofficial start of the summer with BBQ.  While BBQ sauces are delicious and add a special zing to a cookout, it’s not the best thing to have while on a kidney-friendly diet.  The folks at Davita understand this and offer an excellent recipe for a BBQ sauce you can use on grilled chicken, fish or even veggies!

Spicy BBQ Sauce

Diet Types:  CKD non-dialysis, Diabetes, Dialysis, Lower Protein

Serving Size:
2 tablespoons

Ingredients
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 tablespoon all-purpose white flour
1/4 cup dark corn syrup
1/4 cup tarragon vinegar
1/4 cup onion
1 cup water
2 teaspoon dry mustard
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon Tabasco® sauce
1 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet® seasoning
1/4 teaspoon salt

Preparation
1. Stir oil and flour together to make a paste.
2. Chop onion.
3. Add all remaining ingredients.
4. Cook the mixture on low heat until it thickens.
5. Brush sauce on baked or grilled meat.

Helpful hints
Kitchen Bouquet is a browning and seasoning sauce composed of caramel with vegetable flavorings.
