If your appointment is scheduled with a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Advanced Practice Provider (APP), you may wonder what that means. The good news is simple: you are still under your kidney doctor’s care, and you are still exactly where you need to be.
At Balboa Nephrology, NPs and APPs are part of the kidney care team. They work closely with your nephrologist to help make sure you get timely care, clear answers, and close follow-up. They are not replacing your doctor. They are helping carry out your care plan. That can be especially helpful in kidney care, where patients often need regular follow-up, medication review, blood pressure checks, and help understanding test results.
An NP or APP may help by:
• reviewing your lab results and explaining what they mean in plain language
• going over your medications to make sure everything still makes sense
• helping with blood pressure, swelling, and day-to-day concerns
• answering questions and talking through next steps
• helping coordinate follow-up care, referrals, or education
For many patients, these visits help them feel more supported and less rushed. You may also be able to get an appointment sooner, which can make a big difference when you have questions or need closer monitoring. The most important thing to know is this: your care is still guided by your nephrologist, and your team is working together on your behalf. Kidney care works best when patients feel informed, supported, and connected. Seeing an NP or APP is one more way we help make that happen.
