Foodie Friday – 8 Diet Tips to Manage Chronic Kidney Disease

It’s #FoodieFriday! It’s also a good time to mention how a healthy diet can help you manage diabetes and high blood pressure while still being tasty.  Diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) are the two leading causes of kidney disease. A kidney-friendly diet should limit sodium, cholesterol, and fat and instead focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean meats such as seafood, poultry, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds, and soy products.  We found a great article with helpful diet tips on how to prevent or manage chronic kidney disease. And of course, ALWAYS check with your physician or renal dietician before starting a new diet.

As part of a kidney-friendly diet, you may need to limit certain foods to help prevent further kidney damage.  Here are a few ways to tweak your diet to maintain kidney health:

1. Portion your plate
2. Limit your salt intake
3. Be mindful of protein
4. Choose complex carbs over simple carbs
5. Limit saturated fats and avoid trans fat
6. Watch your alcohol intake
7. Talk to your doctor about whether you need to limit phosphorus and potassium
8. Work with a dietitian
