Melanie Braytenbah (Akins) joined Balboa Nephrology Medical Group in 2018. She provides dialysis coverage at both FMC and DaVita Dialysis units throughout San Diego County.

Melanie received her Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner degree at Middle Tennessee State University.

In her free time, Melanie enjoys hiking, traveling, sightseeing, and outdoor activities with her dogs and loved ones.

Dr. Cruz Whitley joined Balboa Nephrology in January 2023.  She attended medical school at the University of California San Diego where she was a part of the Program in Medical Education with a focus on Health Equity (PRIME-HEq). Dr. Whitley completed an internal medicine residency in the primary care track at the University California Davis. She completed nephrology fellowship training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital Joint Nephrology Program where she received the program’s inaugural Humanism in Medicine Award.

Dr. Whitley went on to complete palliative care training at the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program. She is interested in integrating palliative care and nephrology with a focus on advanced care planning, shared decision making and supportive care of kidney patients, as well as increasing access to palliative medicine to underserved communities.

She is a native San Diegan and is happy to return to her hometown.

Dr. Lozada joined Balboa Nephrology Medical Group in 2005. She practices in the Chula Vista area; specializing in all aspects of kidney disease including renal replacement therapies. She has been the Medical Director of a south San Diego dialysis unit for the last 15 years.

Dr. Lozada attended medical school at the University of California Los Angeles where she obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree. She completed both her residency and Nephrology fellowship at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Dr. Meyer joined Balboa Nephrology Medical Group in 2009. She practices at Sharp Chula Vista Hospital and two offices in the Chula Vista area. She specializes in hypertension and kidney disease and cares for patients on hemodialysis at both FMC and DaVita Dialysis units.

Dr. Meyer attended medical school at the American University in Coral Gables, Florida where she obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree. After completing her residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she earned her Nephrology fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Meyer is also a Principal Investigator for Balboa Research, formerly California Institute for Renal Research (CIRR).  Dr. Meyer speaks Spanish and serves as a Member of the Board for Balboa Nephrology.

In her free time, she enjoys downhill skiing, running and spending time at the beach with her two beautiful girls.

Laura Oglesby, NP joined Balboa Nephrology in December 2024, serving patients in Chula Vista East, Chula Vista West, and National City. Laura’s nursing career began in 2014.  She has extensive experience caring for diverse patient populations, including those in stroke, neurology, and medical-surgical units. In 2018, Laura pursued the Nurse Practitioner Program at Maryville University, earning an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree in 2023. Laura’s clinical background encompasses urgent care, progressive care, and critical care settings, including trauma, surgery, and burn ICU.

Dr. Juan Quevedo join Balboa Nephrology in March 2025.  Dr. Quevedo is an interventional nephrologist dedicated to comprehensive kidney care, with specialized expertise in dialysis access management and innovative treatments for varicose vein disease.

During his nephrology fellowship, Dr. Quevedo was honored as Fellow of the Year in 2014, and he currently holds a distinguished Fellow membership in the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology.

He earned his medical degree from the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, completed his residency in internal medicine at Universidad Central del Caribe/University Hospital in Bayamon, and pursued a nephrology fellowship at the Metropolitan Hospital Center/Richmond University Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Quevedo further honed his skills through a fellowship in interventional nephrology at American Access Care in Brooklyn, NY, and vascular training in varicose vein disease therapies at the Southern California Vein Care Center.

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Quevedo brings a broad and nuanced approach to patient care.
